31 березня 2026 року: церковне свято, прикмети і заборони дня
31 March is the day of remembrance of Saint Hypatius, Bishop, in the Orthodox calendar.
Little is known about his early life. It is noted that Hypatius was born at a time when the Christian community of Volhynia was facing external challenges and internal trials.
From his youth, he strove for spiritual perfection, devoting himself to prayer, fasting and the study of the Holy Scriptures. His virtues and love of God, as the article states, attracted the attention of the church leadership and eventually led to his ordination as a bishop.
As Bishop Ipatius, he was noted for his concern for the spiritual and moral well-being of his flock. He preached, instructed priests and oversaw educational activities at monasteries and parishes.
His mentoring work, as noted, helped to strengthen church discipline and faith among the laity.
Saint Hypatius also distinguished himself as a builder of the church community. With his assistance, a number of churches were restored, monasteries were founded, and scriptoria were organised for the copying and preservation of church books.
Saint Hypatius is honoured as an example of service to Christ and the Church. The article also states that even after his earthly passing, he remains the spiritual patron of Volhynia and a source of inspiration for the faithful.
What not to do on 31 March and what the weather signs are
Traditionally, on 31 March, people paid attention to weather omens. If the wind was strong, this was considered a sign of a cold April. If the clouds drifted high and lightly, the coming days were expected to be fine. If swallows were already visible in the sky on this day, spring was expected to be warm and early.
On this day, it was advised not to leave the house in a mess. It was believed that one should tidy up, wash the floor and pay particular attention to keeping the table and sink clean.
It was also not recommended to leave dirty dishes or to borrow or lend money or items, as this could bring trouble or misfortune.
On this day, Orthodox Christians turn to Saint Hypatius with prayers for the healing of physical and spiritual ailments.
They pray especially for the health of children, the cure of infertility, and an abundant supply of milk for nursing mothers. The day is considered auspicious for spiritual practices, good intentions, and good deeds in the home.
As a reminder, the PinchukArtCentre has presented a large-scale group project, ‘Joy’, in which Ukrainian and international artists explore one of the most important emotions that gives us strength in difficult times.
