+700 MW by winter: the EBRD’s energy sector support plan
This was reported by Ukrinform following a meeting of the International Coordination Group on Energy Security.
Priorities and scope of assistance
The EBRD’s plan for the current year focuses on creating highly flexible and decentralised generation:
-
700 MW — capacity from renewable gas and energy storage systems (subject to successful procurement).
-
400 MW — thermal capacity for the municipal sector (enhancing urban resilience).
-
180 MW — distributed renewable energy already supported through partner banks.
In addition, the EBRD is working with the World Bank on a 1 GW platform to attract private investors to renewable energy.
Conditions for support: speed and reforms
Odile Renaud-Basso emphasised that to bridge the 9 GW gap, Ukraine needs to:
- Speed up implementation: minimise the time between decision-making and equipment installation.
- Carry out reforms: ensure regulatory independence and the autonomy of state-owned energy companies.
- Attract private capital: create a transparent and predictable regulatory environment.
The bank also confirmed its readiness, if necessary, to finance gas imports by Naftogaz again, as it did last year.
