The 70-year-old former French president Nicolas Sarkozy will begin serving a five-year prison sentence
Sarkozy will be held in a secure section of the prison, where high-ranking individuals requiring special security measures are detained, reports ThePublic.info citing Deutsche Welle. According to France Info, the former president will be placed in a solitary cell. He will be allowed three visits per week and two walks per day.
Since Sarkozy is 70 years old, immediately after beginning his sentence, he can file a petition for parole - the appeals court will need to review it within two months.
Earlier, the Paris court found the former President of France guilty of conspiracy related to the financing of his election campaign by Libya. He was sentenced to five years, reports BFM TV.
In other episodes of this case - embezzlement of state funds, passive corruption, and violation of campaign finance rules - Sarkozy was acquitted. The prosecution previously demanded seven years of imprisonment for the politician.
