A Ukrainian Armed Forces major has been sentenced to 10 years for embezzling food supplies intended for military personnel
This was reported by the Office of the Prosecutor General.
How the scheme worked
The investigation established that, whilst preparing meals for personnel, the actual quantity of food used was less than that recorded in the accounting documents. According to the prosecution, the difference between the actual and recorded quantities of food was embezzled.
The items in question included meat, cereals, sugar, butter, sausages, eggs and cooking oil. The surplus was taken out of the military unit and sold to civilians. According to law enforcement officials, the head of logistics personally transported the food in his own car.
Law enforcement officers documented 59 incidents
According to the case file, the unlawful misappropriation of property took place from June 2024 to January 2025. During this period, investigators documented 59 separate incidents. The total amount of losses incurred by the state was estimated at approximately 500,000 hryvnias. In January 2025, the official was arrested.
What sentence did the court hand down?
The court found the military officer guilty of misappropriating military property under martial law (Article 410(4) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine). He was sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment and stripped of his military rank of ‘major’. Separately, legal proceedings are ongoing against the canteen manager, whom the investigation considers to be an accomplice in this scheme.
