A Ukrainian woman attempted to smuggle the tusks of an endangered walrus into Poland. She now faces imprisonment
This has been reported by the Polish Border Guard.
According to the agency, the contraband was discovered during an X-ray scan of the luggage of passengers on a bus travelling from Ukraine to Poland. The tusks found measure 52 and 45 centimetres in length.
According to customs officials, the passenger did not declare the cargo and did not have the necessary permits to transport rare items.
Customs officers have now seized the tusks, and law enforcement agencies have launched an investigation into the matter. The tax office in Rzeszów states that the Arctic walrus is protected under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).
It is reported that transporting such items across the EU border, as well as trading in them, is a criminal offence. The woman faces a prison sentence of between three months and five years.
As a reminder, an attempt to smuggle over 200 antique coins to Poland was previously foiled in Volyn.
