Andy Burnham is set to become Prime Minister of the UK: what is known about him
Andy Burnham
Politician Andy Burnham has officially become leader of the Labour Party — he was the sole candidate and received 379 votes from his party’s MPs and 23 from the trade unions and socialist organisations that form part of the party.

Sky News reports this.

This means he will lead the government as Prime Minister following the resignation of fellow Labour MP Keir Starmer. His appointment must be approved by King Charles III, after which he will officially take office as head of government on 20 July.

Andy Burnham: what is known about him

Burnam, 56, who previously served as Mayor of Greater Manchester, won the by-election in the Makerfield constituency in north-west England on 19 June, becoming a Member of Parliament.

He is due to be sworn in to Parliament today, according to the German broadcaster Deutsche Welle. In the by-election, he beat Robert Kenyon, the candidate for the far-right Reform UK party, securing almost 55 per cent of the vote.

Prior to this, Andy Burnham was a Member of the House of Commons and served in Prime Minister Gordon Brown’s government, notably in the areas of culture, media, sport and health. He has also already stated that he plans to stand in any future Labour leadership election.

He is one of the founders of the Unbroken Cities Network — an initiative that brings together cities around the world to help develop a rehabilitation programme in Ukraine. In March 2022, he also organised a humanitarian aid collection for residents of Kyiv, Kharkiv and Lviv who had been affected by the war.

“We must not allow Russia to achieve its objectives in Ukraine. It is vital that we continue to provide Ukrainians with every possible form of assistance. The UK Government has reaffirmed its commitment to this approach, and it is essential that our allies do the same,” he said on Holodomor Remembrance Day 2024.

John Ratcliffe, Director of the US Central Intelligence Agency, has stated that the average lifespan of a Russian soldier upon arrival on the battlefield in Ukraine is between 20 and 30 minutes. According to him, one of the main reasons for this is Ukraine’s widespread use of attack drones equipped with artificial intelligence.
