Mexican Navy plane crashes off Texas coast, killing at least five people
At least five people have been killed as a Mexican Navy plane crashed into the waters of the Gulf near Galveston. This was reported by representatives of the US Coast Guard. This is reported by The Public with reference to CBSnews and CNN.
Eight people were on board, including four military personnel and four civilians. The aircraft was transporting patients with severe burns as part of a humanitarian medical mission. A two-year-old child was confirmed dead. Two people were taken to hospital, and another person was reported missing for a long time.
The accident occurred at around 15:17 local time during the landing approach. Witnesses reported dense fog over the bay, with visibility of less than half a kilometre at the time of the crash. The plane was almost completely underwater.
Local resident Sky Decker was the first to reach the crash site and rescued a woman who was trapped inside the fuselage. According to him, she could only breathe through a small air pocket about eight centimetres high.
The plane took off from the city of Mérida in the Mexican state of Yucatán and was heading to Galveston International Airport, located 80 kilometres from Houston. The crash is being investigated by the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board.
The Mexican Navy expressed condolences to the families of the victims and declared full cooperation with the US services.
