Azerbaijan has put its troops on alert on the border with Iran
After the outbreak of war between the United States, Israel and Iran, the Azerbaijani Armed Forces were placed on combat alert. Additional military forces were deployed on the border with Iran.
According to information confirmed to Gazetchi by several sources, the Azerbaijani Ministry of Defence, the State Border Service, the Ministry of Internal Troops and the Ministry of Emergency Situations have switched to combat readiness mode number one.
It is reported that leave has been cancelled for military personnel. Soldiers, sergeants and officers who were on leave have been recalled to their units. Systems to counter drones and low-flying aircraft have also been deployed on the border with Iran.
Iranian Ambassador to Baku Mujtaba Demirchilu said during a press conference that Iran does not expect an attack from Azerbaijan. According to him, Azerbaijan has clearly stated at the highest level that no attack against Iran will be organised from its territory.
On the same day, the Japanese Embassy in Baku announced the temporary suspension of consular activities due to growing tensions in the region.
"Due to the escalation of the situation in the Middle East, the Japanese Embassy in the Republic of Azerbaijan will temporarily close its consular section to ensure the safety of visitors and staff," the diplomatic mission's official website said.
The Azerbaijani Ministry of Defence has not officially commented on reports of troop concentrations on the border with Iran. The head of the ministry's press service, Anar Eyvazov, did not respond to calls and requests from Gazetchi journalists.
