Church holiday on 25 June 2026: where to place the ‘Deliverer’ icon at home
According to the New Julian calendar, on this day Orthodox Christians venerate the miraculous icon of the Mother of God known as ‘The Deliverer’.
According to church tradition, the icon was painted on Mount Athos in 1788. Its owner was the schemamonk Martinian, who had received the icon as a gift.
In 1841, the elder brought the relic to the Greek town of Mavrovoni, where the local inhabitants were suffering from a locust plague. After a communal prayer, as the legend goes, birds destroyed the insects. This icon is also associated with the story of the resurrection of a deceased young man.
Later, the icon was transferred to the Monastery of Saint Panteleimon on Mount Athos, and subsequently to the New Athos Monastery.
According to tradition, many years later, when the whereabouts of the relic remained unknown, the Mother of God appeared in a dream to one of the monks and instructed him to transfer it to the Manyava Monastery of the Exaltation of the Cross in Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast. Today, the miraculous icon is housed there.
What do people pray for before the ‘Deliverer’ icon?
Before the icon of the Mother of God ‘The Deliverer’, the faithful pray for:
- protection from danger;
- healing from illness;
- deliverance from addictions;
- peace of mind;
- support in difficult life situations;
- peace and the strengthening of faith.
Where to place the ‘Deliverer’ icon at home
In the Orthodox tradition, it is recommended to place the icon in the place where the family usually prays.
It is also common to place the icon near the entrance to the home. Before leaving the house, believers can turn to God in prayer and ask for a blessing for the day, their journey or an important matter.
Clergy emphasise that the icon is not a talisman or a piece of interior décor. Its primary purpose is to assist a person during prayer.
