Church holiday on 26 June 2026: what to put in your left pocket for good luck
On 26 June, according to the new church calendar, the faithful commemorate the Venerable David of Thessaloniki. According to church tradition, he renounced worldly life at a young age, entered the monastery of the Holy Martyrs Theodore and Mercury, and later settled near Thessaloniki.
The most famous period of the saint’s life was spent in a simple hut beneath an almond tree. There, for around 70 years, he devoted himself to prayer, fasting and spiritual asceticism, renouncing worldly goods.
On this day, people turn to the Venerable David with prayers for the strengthening of faith, peace of mind, patience and help in difficult life circumstances.
What are the folk omens for 26 June?
According to folk observations, a clear and calm morning promises a warm summer without sudden cold snaps. Heavy dew foretells a hot and dry day, whilst a large number of mosquitoes and midges in the evening indicate warm and windless weather the following day.
What not to do on 26 June
According to folk beliefs, it is not recommended to borrow or lend money on this day. It was believed that this could lead to financial losses or a deterioration in relationships. This superstition is not a church prohibition.
What to put in your left pocket
In the folk calendar, this day is known as ‘David the Strawberry-Picker’, as it was at the end of June that people began to pick the first wild strawberries.
According to tradition, a few strawberry leaves placed in your left pocket can bring financial luck and happy changes. On this day, housewives would also make wild strawberry jam, dry the leaves for tea, and prepare dumplings or pastries with the berries, which, according to folk belief, brought prosperity to the home.
