Dan Jarvis has been appointed as the UK’s new Defence Secretary: what is known about him
This was announced on the UK government’s website.
“The King has been pleased to approve the following appointment: Dan Jarvis, MP, Member of the Order of the British Empire, as Secretary of State for Defence,” the statement reads.
Since 2024, Jarvis has served as Minister for Security at the Home Office. He also served as Mayor of South Yorkshire from 2018 to 2022.
Prior to his political career, from 1997 to 2011, Jarvis served as an officer in the British Army’s Parachute Regiment. He took part in military missions in Kosovo, Sierra Leone, Iraq and Afghanistan. And since 2011, he has been a Member of Parliament for the Barnsley North constituency.
As a reminder, it was previously reported that UK Defence Secretary John Giley had resigned over a dispute regarding defence spending.
