A Democratic member of the House of Representatives has announced that she will table a draft resolution to impeach Defence Secretary Pete Hagset over his actions in the US war against Iran.

This is according to Axios.

According to Yasmin Ansari (a Democrat from Arizona), next week she will table a draft resolution calling for Hagset’s resignation on the grounds of “repeated breaches of his oath and duty to the Constitution”.

“Hegset’s reckless endangerment of American servicemen and repeated war crimes… constitute grounds for impeachment and removal from office,” she said.

The Democrat also called on the Cabinet to invoke the 25th Amendment to the US Constitution to remove President Donald Trump from office for his “insane statements” about war.

“The 25th Amendment exists for a reason; the Cabinet must invoke it. At stake are the fate of American troops, the Iranian people and the very foundations of our global system,” Ansari added.

However, Axios notes that impeachment requires a two-thirds majority in the Senate. But given that both chambers are controlled by Republicans, Ansari’s attempt to initiate impeachment is highly unlikely.

Nor is there any real chance that the Cabinet, which consists of people loyal to Trump, will invoke the 25th Amendment to the Constitution to impeach him.

The publication added that Ansari is not the first member of the Democratic Party to have proposed Hegset’s impeachment.
