Family Day in Ukraine 2026: the date of the holiday and traditions
Family Day in Ukraine in 2026 falls on 15 May.
This year, the holiday will be celebrated on a Friday.
In Ukraine, this date coincides with International Family Day. Presidential Decree No. 455/2023 stipulates that Family Day in Ukraine is celebrated annually on 15 May – International Family Day.
The UN General Assembly proclaimed International Day of Families in 1993 by Resolution 47/237. It is celebrated annually on 15 May.
The aim of this date is to draw attention to the role of the family in society, support for families, the upbringing of children and family values.
Why is the holiday celebrated on 15 May?
In Ukraine, Family Day used to be celebrated on a different date.
Following changes introduced by Presidential Decree No. 455/2023 of 28 July 2023, Family Day began to be celebrated on 15 May – in line with the UN’s international date.
Thus, the calendar of family holidays in Ukraine was aligned with the international day dedicated to the role of the family, support for loved ones and family policy issues.
How Family Day is celebrated
Family Day is not an official public holiday, but many Ukrainians spend it with their families.
Traditionally, families gather for dinner together, go on outings to the countryside, and visit parents, grandparents and other loved ones.
Schools, nurseries and communities may hold themed events dedicated to family values, mutual support and respect between generations.
For many, it is not so much a calendar holiday as an opportunity to thank their loved ones, spend time together and remind themselves of the people who remain by their side during the most difficult times.
How Family Day differs from Mother’s Day and Father’s Day
Family Day, Mother’s Day and Father’s Day are different holidays.
Family Day in Ukraine is celebrated on 15 May.
Mother’s Day in Ukraine traditionally falls on the second Sunday in May.
Father’s Day is celebrated on the third Sunday in June.
Family Day has a broader meaning: it is dedicated not to mothers or fathers individually, but to the whole family, mutual support, care, love and responsibility among loved ones.
Why family holidays are important
Family holidays in Ukraine have taken on special significance in recent years.
Due to the war, forced relocations, separation, mobilisation and life abroad, many families have found themselves far apart.
That is why Family Day has become a reminder for many Ukrainians of their connection with loved ones, support, mutual understanding and the simple things that are felt particularly keenly during wartime.
