Dozens of MPs are calling on British Prime Minister Starmer to resign following the election defeat
The Guardian reports this.
The Labour Party lost nearly 1,500 councillors in local elections across England amid the rising popularity of Nigel Farage’s Reform UK party. Meanwhile, the Green Party took some of Labour’s support in London.
Labour also lost power in Wales, where it had been the dominant political force for centuries, winning just 17 of the 129 seats in the parliament. This is the worst result in the party’s history.
Dozens of Labour MPs have publicly called on Prime Minister Starmer to resign or set out a timetable for his departure following the announcement of the results. According to media reports, potential rivals for the Labour leadership have also begun preparing for a political battle.
Among them are said to be the current UK Health Secretary, Wes Stitting, and Starmer’s former deputy, Angela Rayner.
However, Starmer told the Observer newspaper that he wants to remain in office for 10 years. According to media reports, he plans to deliver a speech on 11 May, in which he will promise bolder action to tackle the ‘major challenges’ facing the country, and will attempt to persuade his MPs not to remove him from the leadership of the Labour Party.
To launch a leadership challenge within the Labour Party, candidates must secure the support of 81 MPs, which is one-fifth of the current total.
