Drones attacked an oil refinery in Yaroslavl and industrial facilities in the Rostov Region
On the night of Friday, 8 May, drones attacked the Russian city of Yaroslavl. Mikhail Yevraev, Governor of the Yaroslavl Region, confirmed the attack but did not provide any details of the consequences.
The ASTRA Telegram channel, citing OSINT analysis, stated that the Slavneft-YANOS oil refinery caught fire following the strike. According to open-source data, the plant is among the five largest oil refineries in Russia in terms of hydrocarbon processing capacity and is the largest refinery in the Central Federal District of the Russian Federation.
The plant has a capacity of around 15 million tonnes of crude oil per year. The facility produces petrol, diesel fuel and jet fuel. The main refining asset of PJSC ‘NGK Slavneft’ is owned by PJSC ‘NK Rosneft’ and PJSC ‘Gazprom’.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that the Ukrainian Defence Forces had struck an oil facility in Yaroslavl, located more than 700 kilometres from the Ukrainian border.
“Yaroslavl, more than 700 kilometres from Ukraine’s state border. An oil facility that was of great importance for financing the Russian war,” Zelenskyy wrote on Facebook.
Drones also attacked the Rostov region. The region’s governor, Yuriy Slyusar, stated that debris had caused damage in Taganrog, Bataysk, Rostov-on-Don and the Myasnikovsky district.
According to Exilenova+, the facility targeted was “Rostovagropromzapchast”, which manufactures and repairs technical equipment.
ASTRA reports that a fire broke out following the attack in the Western Industrial Zone of Rostov-on-Don, where the Empils paint and varnish factory and a branch of the Radar Scientific and Technical Centre are located.
“Empils” is considered one of the key chemical and paint and varnish plants in southern Russia. The “Radar” scientific and technical centre is engaged in the development and maintenance of special-purpose complexes.
Perm has also come under drone attack once again. Dmitry Makhonin, Governor of the Perm Krai, reported an attack on “industrial sites” in the region. According to preliminary data, there are no casualties or injuries.
In addition, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin stated that 25 drones were allegedly shot down as they approached the Russian capital. Operations at Vnukovo and Domodedovo airports were restricted due to the attacks.
