Accident with serious consequences: the Attorney General promises to restore justice
Ruslan Kravchenko reported that after auditing criminal proceedings, 178 cases of traffic accidents with serious consequences were identified, which had not been effectively investigated for over 3–5 years, according to thepublic.info citing the official Telegram channel of the Prosecutor General.
"Last month, I instructed an audit of all criminal proceedings related to traffic accidents with serious consequences where the investigation had been ongoing for more than 3–5 years. The situation turned out to be disheartening: 178 cases had practically not progressed. In these accidents, 69 people died, including 3 children. Another 99 people sustained severe injuries, including 9 children," - reports the Attorney General.
According to Kravchenko, who provided examples of traffic accidents, the main causes of these incidents are violations of traffic rules and driving under the influence of alcohol:
"Head-on collision due to recklessness. A female driver of an 'Audi A6' drove into oncoming traffic. Two young girls, passengers in another car, sustained severe injuries that threatened their lives.
A truck driver got behind the wheel in a state of severe intoxication, lost control, and collided with a passenger car. Two adults died, and a young child was left an orphan.
Negligence of officials. Officials from the Sumy Oblast Road Maintenance reported installing signs on a destroyed bridge, which was not properly marked. A car with two military personnel fell into the river — both died.
Traffic accident involving a minibus. The driver exceeded the speed limit, lost control, and crashed into a barrier. Passengers — ordinary people returning from work — sustained severe injuries.
A cyclist on the roadside. A drunk driver of a car drove off the road and hit a boy returning home from training. The boy died at the scene."
Now, all 178 proceedings are under the control of the Office of the Prosecutor General and the heads of regional prosecutors' offices.
