Fares on the Kyiv City Express are set to rise: prices from 22 July
Ukrzaliznytsia has announced the fare change.
How much will a journey on the Kyiv City Express cost?
The basic ticket price will double to 30 hryvnias. However, a service charge will be added to the price when purchasing a ticket at a terminal, ticket office or directly on board the train.
| How to buy a ticket | Cost |
|---|---|
| Ukrzaliznytsia app or ‘Kyiv Digital’ | 30 UAH |
| Validator or ‘Kyiv Digital’ terminal | 34.20 UAH |
| Ukrzaliznytsia self-service terminal | 36.70 UAH |
| Ticket office or on-board ticket clerk | 37 UAH |
So, passengers who buy tickets via the Ukrzaliznytsia app or ‘Kyiv Digital’ will be able to save money. In other cases, the same journey will cost 4.20–7 hryvnias more.
Why is Ukrzaliznytsia raising its fares?
The company explained that it had decided to bring the cost of a single journey into line with public transport fares in Kyiv.
From 15 July, a single journey on the capital’s metro, buses, trams, trolleybuses and funiculars costs 30 hryvnias. Discounts are available for regular public transport users, depending on the number of journeys purchased, according to the Kyiv City State Administration.
Ukrzaliznytsia notes that the costs of maintaining and repairing electric trains, electricity and traffic management are constantly rising. According to the operator, revenue from ticket sales is insufficient to cover these costs.
The company also stated that, from 2021, Kyiv will no longer compensate for the costs of transporting passengers in eligible categories. Since the start of 2026 alone, the amount of this debt, according to Ukrzaliznytsia’s calculations, has exceeded 10 million hryvnias.
Will season tickets be introduced for the city commuter train?
Season tickets are planned for passengers who regularly use the Kyiv City Express. Ukrzaliznytsia promises that these will allow passengers to pay less for their daily journeys.
The company has not yet announced the launch date for the season tickets, their cost or the number of journeys included. Ukrzaliznytsia has stated that the relevant decision is still being finalised.
Which concessions will remain in place
The fare increase will not cancel existing concessions. Students will still be able to buy discounted tickets via the Ukrzaliznytsia app.
Veterans and pensioners retain the right to free travel. To travel, they will need to obtain a free travel document from a railway ticket office.
There is no information regarding changes to the Kyiv City Express timetable or routes following the introduction of the new fare.
