Gitanas Nausėda called on the world to take action on the 40th anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster
This was reported on the official X (Twitter) page of Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda
Nuclear energy as a weapon of war
Gitanas Nausėda emphasised that Russia is using nuclear energy for blackmail, citing the situation at the occupied Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, actions at Chernobyl and threats related to the Ostrovets Nuclear Power Plant (Astravets). According to the President of Lithuania, the aggressor is turning energy into a weapon through the occupation of facilities and direct attacks on infrastructure.
“We must not allow history to repeat itself. Russia is once again putting the world at risk. More decisive international action and sanctions against Rosatom are needed,” emphasised Gitanas Nausėda.
Social media reaction: from gratitude to hostile attacks
The Lithuanian president’s post sparked a heated debate. The comments under the post clearly reveal a divide among the audience:
-
Support: Ukrainian and European users thank Lithuania for its consistent stance: “Thank you for remembering and sharing our pain.”
-
Propaganda attacks: There is noticeable activity from accounts (likely bots) attempting to shift the blame for nuclear risks onto Ukraine and dismissing calls for safety as “fairy tales for idiots”.
-
Global concern: Foreign experts stress that a nuclear facility without adequate staff in a combat zone poses a risk to all of humanity, regardless of political views.
