The Ukrainian economy is currently heavily reliant on external funding. The funds currently available from the International Monetary Fund will only be sufficient to meet the state’s needs until the start of summer

Lesya Zaburanna, Chair of the Subcommittee on State Budget Expenditure of the Verkhovna Rada’s Budget Committee, made this statement during a live broadcast on Rano.LIVE

Where are domestic resources and aid being spent?

According to the official, the state budget is clearly divided by source of funding:

  • Defence: absolutely all domestic revenue and collected taxes are directed towards funding the defence sector;

  • Social sector: pension payments, salaries for teachers and medical staff, as well as other social obligations, are funded exclusively through financial support from international partners.

Risks to the economy

Zaburanna emphasised that for the stable survival of Ukraine’s economy, Western allies must approve new tranches without delay. Any delay in aid poses a direct threat to the state’s ability to fulfil its social obligations as early as June.
