Iran carried out strikes on US military facilities in Bahrain and Kuwait following the US attacks
Tensions between the US and Iran are escalating in the Middle East. Following US strikes on Iranian military targets, Tehran announced attacks on US military bases in Bahrain and Kuwait.
The Iranian news agency Fars reported that the naval and aerospace forces of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps had carried out strikes using drones and missiles against 85 US military facilities in Port Salman, Bahrain’s Fifth Naval District and Ali Salem Air Base in Kuwait. Furthermore, according to the Iranian side, an American MQ-9 drone was shot down in Bushehr Province, which was allegedly attempting to disrupt the operation.
The Bahraini authorities confirmed that air-raid sirens sounded across the country following Iran’s warning of a “devastating response”. Kuwait also reported that it had responded to the threat of missile and drone attacks.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps stated that the strikes were directed at US military facilities in response to “air strikes on a number of coastal bases and civilian targets in the provinces of Hormozgan and Mahshahr”. The statement made no mention of attacks on vessels in the Strait of Hormuz.
According to the Iranian military, drones also struck areas where US forces were concentrated at the ‘Sheikh Isa’ airbase in Bahrain. Tehran stated that, following the US strikes, all US military bases in the region had become “legitimate targets”.
Kuwait’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned the Iranian attacks, stating that they “systematically undermine efforts to de-escalate tensions” in the Middle East.
Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs also warned other states in the region against allowing the US to use their territory to launch strikes against Iran. The Speaker of the Iranian Parliament, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, stated on social media platform X: “The era of intimidation and extortion is over. This will lead nowhere. We will not back down.”
Iran’s latest strikes coincided with US President Donald Trump’s visit to Turkey to attend the NATO summit. Anwar Gargash, a senior diplomat from the United Arab Emirates, described Iran’s attacks on Bahrain and Kuwait as “clear evidence that Tehran, as before, unable to comply with calls for de-escalation and to turn the page on the war".
The day before, US Central Command reported strikes on Iranian air defence systems, command and communications networks, coastal radar stations, anti-ship missile defences and more than 60 vessels belonging to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. Washington stated that the operation was in response to Iran’s attacks on tankers in the Strait of Hormuz.
Following the incidents involving three tankers, the US also reinstated sanctions against Iranian oil. CENTCOM stated that Iran’s actions were “unjustified, dangerous and constituted a clear violation of the ceasefire”.
