Lionel Messi tops the ranking for goal-scoring contributions at the 2026 World Cup
Argentina striker Lionel Messi has become the sole leader in terms of the number of goal-contributing actions at the 2026 World Cup, according to the AP.
In the semi-final against England, Messi provided two assists. In the 86th minute, he set up Enzo Fernández, and in stoppage time he assisted Lautaro Martínez, who scored the winning goal.
This brought the Argentine’s tally to 12 goal-contributing actions in the tournament. He has scored eight goals and provided four assists. Messi has thus overtaken France striker Kylian Mbappé, who has 11 goal contributions – eight goals and three assists.
Furthermore, Messi and Mbappé remain the World Cup’s top scorers with eight goals each. Lionel Messi was also named man of the match in the tournament’s second semi-final.
In the semi-final, Argentina beat England 2–1 to reach the final. In the final, Lionel Scaloni’s side will face Spain, who beat France 2–0 in the other semi-final.
The 2026 World Cup final between Spain and Argentina will take place on 19 July at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford. The match is scheduled to kick off at 22:00 Kyiv time. Prior to that, France and England will contest the third-place play-off.
