Lithuania to buy €320 million worth of air defence missiles from Saab
Lithuania has signed a contract with Swedish defence company Saab to purchase Bolide missiles for short-range air defence systems RBS 70 worth more than €320 million. This was reported by the Lithuanian Ministry of Defence and the manufacturer, reports DW.
Taking into account the previously concluded agreements, the new contract will ensure the continuous supply of this ammunition to the Lithuanian armed forces in the period from 2026 to 2032. Lithuanian Defence Minister Robertas Kaunas emphasised that strengthening air defence is one of the country's key priorities
The Lithuanian air defence battalion is equipped with RBS 70 systems, which were chosen due to their high mobility, ease of operation and resistance to electronic interference. The Bolide missiles are laser-guided and designed to engage modern air targets at short range
Earlier, Vilnius also announced the purchase of anti-tank ammunition and disposable grenade launchers from Saab. Against the backdrop of Russia's war against Ukraine, Lithuania sees the security situation in the region as a direct threat and plans to spend 5.38 per cent of GDP on defence in 2026. The country shares borders with Russia's Kaliningrad region and Belarus, which is an ally of Moscow
