Macron warns: without restraint, Russia will "return" – Europe doubts the US plan
«If there are no deterrent mechanisms – the Russians will return and break their promises», — said Emmanuel Macron.
As reported by ThePublic.info, citing The Guardian, amid new negotiations regarding the US peace plan between Washington, Kyiv, and European leaders, there is growing concern that the proposed conditions may play into Russia's hands.
French President Emmanuel Macron, commenting on the document, emphasized that any plan must guarantee “security for all Europeans”, not just a ceasefire. He stated that in the absence of deterrent elements, Russia «is unlikely to fulfill its promises» and may resume aggression.
The US insists on an agreement — but does not consider it final
• Donald Trump told journalists near the White House that the current draft agreement “is not a final proposal”, but, in his words, the war needs to be ended “one way or another”.
• Some senators who reviewed the document stated that certain provisions resemble a “wishlist” for Russia.
• Meanwhile, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio assures that the plan is a “strong basis for negotiations”.
Negotiations in Switzerland
On Sunday, Ukrainian and US delegations will meet in Switzerland. The draft plan, which Kyiv has already received from Washington, includes:
-
restrictions on the Ukrainian army;
-
renunciation of NATO accession;
-
possible transfer of some territories;
-
a demand for Russia to withdraw from certain occupied areas.
According to Western leaders, the document “requires additional work”.
Europe demands guarantees
Leaders of EU countries, Canada, and Japan stated they will not accept a plan that changes borders by force or leaves Ukraine without means of self-defense.
A key principle is outlined in a joint statement:
«Borders cannot be changed by military force».
Situation on the Front
The Ukrainian General Staff reported an unsuccessful attempt by Russians to advance towards the center of Pokrovsk, using fog. The enemy has been eliminated in the urban zone, fighting continues.
Pressure on Kyiv
US representatives have already made it clear to their NATO partners:
if Ukraine does not agree to the deal in the coming days — further support may be reduced.
After meeting with Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv, US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin stated:
«No agreement will be perfect. But it needs to be signed as soon as possible».
Europe's Reaction
-
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz emphasized that Europe must participate in the process and not allow negotiations to be limited to the US and Russia.
-
Eight Northern and Baltic countries confirmed they will continue arming Ukraine.
-
Poland stated that Kyiv has the right to approve or reject any plan.
