There has been a rise in incidents across Ukraine involving the remote detonation of homemade explosive devices of the ‘PRYANIK’ type. The Ministry of the Interior is urging the public to exercise caution and follow safety guidelines.

The Ministry of the Interior has reported an increase in incidents of remote planting of explosive devices of the ‘Pryanik’ type. Such munitions are difficult to spot and can be disguised as stones or blend in with the ground, grass or tarmac.

The ministry noted that they are being scattered remotely and in large quantities, which increases the risk to the civilian population.

According to Ukraine’s Minister of Internal Affairs, Ihor Klymenko, around 22 per cent of Ukraine’s territory remains potentially contaminated with explosive devices. This amounts to over 133,000 square kilometres. A total of 1,431 people have suffered injuries from landmines and explosive devices, including 146 children.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs has reminded the public that if a suspicious object is found, it must not be touched. It is necessary to move to a safe distance and report the find by calling 101 or 112.

The Ministry emphasised that under no circumstances should anyone attempt to defuse explosive objects themselves.

Earlier, bomb disposal experts from the National Police and pyrotechnicians from the State Emergency Service of Ukraine had discovered round, silver-coloured unexploded ordnance with a diameter of around 10 centimetres following attacks in Kyiv.
