In the Rivne region, a man who opened fire on soldiers and a police officer has been charged
The incident took place on 29 April at around 4.40 pm. A 48-year-old local resident, who was riding his bicycle, saw a patrol car belonging to the emergency response team, which had stopped to check some documents.
At that moment, three soldiers began to get out of the vehicle, whilst a community police officer remained inside. The man pulled out an automatic rifle and fired more than 20 shots, first at the ground and then at the vehicle, before fleeing.
As a result of the shooting, a soldier and a police officer were injured. They were taken to hospital.
A special police operation was launched in the region. Within less than an hour, law enforcement officers identified the attacker. He turned out to be a 48-year-old resident of the same village, who had been on the wanted list for a year and a half.
Police personnel from the region, SBU officers and staff from the regional State Security Service were deployed to assist in the search. KORD officers searched abandoned buildings, dog handlers checked wooded areas, and patrol officers monitored vehicles. Drones equipped with thermal imaging cameras were also deployed.
In less than 24 hours, the man was found hiding in the basement of an abandoned building in the village of Verba.
During the search, an AK-12 assault rifle, three magazines, a silencer, nearly 500 rounds of ammunition, an RGD-5 grenade with a fuse, and camouflage clothing were seized.
The man was served with a notice of suspicion under Part 2 of Article 15, and paragraphs 1 and 8 of Part 2 of Article 115 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, as well as under Part 4 of Article 408 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.
In addition, a pre-trial investigation is ongoing under Part 1 of Article 263 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.
