A Russian agent who was registering Starlink accounts for Russian military personnel has been arrested in the Kyiv region
The Security Service of Ukraine has detained another Russian agent in the Kyiv region who, according to the investigation, was working for the Russian secret services.
The suspect turned out to be a builder from Irpin. According to the case file, he agreed to cooperate with the Russian side in exchange for the promise of ‘easy money’.
The investigation established that the man initially registered a Starlink satellite terminal in his own name and passed the details to his handler. He subsequently registered two further terminals in the names of his colleague and his colleague’s wife without their knowledge.
According to law enforcement officials, the suspect subsequently planned to recruit around 20 more acquaintances to verify the new terminals.
The agent was detained at a construction site in Irpin. During searches of his residence, several smartphones were seized, which had been used to communicate with representatives of the Russian Federation and to recruit other individuals into the scheme.
The investigation established that the man came to the attention of the Russian special services whilst searching for ‘quick money’ on Telegram channels.
He has been charged under Part 2 of Article 111 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine for treason committed under martial law.
The suspect is in custody without the right to bail. He faces life imprisonment with confiscation of property.
The operation was carried out by officers of the Main Directorate of the Security Service of Ukraine in Kyiv and the Kyiv region under the procedural supervision of the Kyiv City Prosecutor’s Office.
