In Volyn, a 38-year-old woman was caught trying to sell her own six-year-old son for $25,000.

This was reported by the Office of the Prosecutor General.

The woman, who had previously been prosecuted for theft, remained living with her youngest son following her divorce, whilst her two older children, aged 13 and 16, stayed with their father.

Not wishing to continue caring for the child, she decided to sell the boy.

In March 2026, the suspect found a ‘buyer’ and agreed to hand over the child in exchange for money, completely disregarding the adoption procedures laid down by law.

The man who was offered the child contacted the police.

The ‘handover’ of the boy took place on 17 April 2026 in Lutsk as part of a special law enforcement operation.

The woman was arrested immediately after receiving the money.

A legal assessment will also be carried out of the actions of social services staff, as the child was registered with them, yet no previous complaints had been received regarding his living conditions.

The boy is currently in a children’s shelter under the supervision of the child welfare authorities.
