The bad weather in Ukraine is set to continue: where to expect snow, wind and frost
The bad weather in Ukraine is set to continue until the end of the month. Over the coming days, various regions can expect strong gusts of wind, sleet, frost, rain, thunderstorms and the dangerous effects of stormy weather.
On Monday, 27 April, strong winds are forecast in the Cherkasy, Kyiv and Zhytomyr regions. In places, wind speeds may reach 72 km/h or 20 m/s. The wind is expected to die down by the end of the day.
Also on 27 April, light snow is expected in Chernihiv, Pryluky and Konotop. Ground frosts down to -2°C are possible.
On Tuesday, 28 April, light snow is possible in the Zhytomyr region. Overnight, temperatures may drop to 0°C.
The Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Centre confirms that dangerous weather conditions will persist in Ukraine over the coming days. Specifically, this includes gusty winds of up to 20 m/s and ground frosts down to -5°C.
Forecasters have issued a yellow danger warning. They have warned of the risk of damage to power lines and emergencies.
On Sunday, 26 April, Ukraine was already hit by severe weather. Stormy winds, thunderstorms and unexpected wet snow caused transport chaos and significant damage in many regions.
Emergency power cuts have been implemented in several regions. Utility services are operating at full capacity.
In western Ukraine, particularly in the Lviv and Volyn regions, snow fell unexpectedly in April. Whilst the centre and east were battered by strong winds, parts of the western regions were blanketed by snow.
In Lviv, in addition to snow and storm-force winds, widespread tree falls were reported. Trees fell in the Shevchenkivskyi district on Khvylovyi Street, as well as on Melnika, Konovaltsia, Tarnavskyi and Dashkevycha Streets.
Municipal services are working to clear roads and pavements as quickly as possible. At the same time, residents are being urged to be careful.
“It is advisable to avoid large trees, power lines, antennas and billboards, as they may injure anyone nearby due to the bad weather,” warn the city services.
In the Vinnytsia region, the bad weather led to a series of road accidents and damage. In Vinnytsia itself, strong winds blew away a bus stop.
The situation on the region’s roads was even more difficult. A tree that had fallen due to the wind blocked traffic.
As drivers attempted to clear the road themselves, another tree fell directly onto the cab of a lorry.
In Zaporizhzhia, a tree fell on Kozak Babura Street. As a result, traffic was restricted in both directions.
The patrol police organised a diversion via nearby streets. Local forecasters warned that thunderstorms and hail were expected in the city by evening.
“Weather conditions could lead to failures of generators, substations and transformers, as well as damage to power lines,” experts warned.
The Poltava region has also seen the effects of the bad weather. The city experienced strong gusts of wind, which caused balconies and tree branches to collapse.
In addition, a dust storm swept through the region.
Kyiv and the Kyiv region also found themselves in the path of a powerful atmospheric front. Strong winds were recorded in the capital region, accompanied by dangerous meteorological phenomena.
Eyewitnesses reported that people were almost being blown off their feet. Due to the risk of injury to people and damage to infrastructure, a yellow alert was officially declared in Kyiv and the region.
The authorities and emergency services have urged residents to exercise the utmost caution whilst outdoors.
Strong gusts of wind have already caused trees to fall. Drivers are strongly advised not to leave their cars under large trees, antennas or advertising structures.
Residents of the capital also reported hail mixed with rain.
In Vyshhorod, Kyiv Oblast, eyewitnesses reported that a roof had been torn off a building.
Forecasters had previously warned of a sharp change in the weather in Ukraine at the end of April. A cold atmospheric front swept across the country, bringing storm-force winds, a significant drop in temperature, rain, thunderstorms and, in some regions, sleet.
In Kyiv, a prolonged period of cold and unpleasant weather was forecast from 25 to 29 April due to the influx of cold air from the Baltic.
The heaviest rain was expected on 26 April. The following nights will be accompanied by a risk of frost.
As reported by ThePublic, Ukraine is facing a sharp change in weather conditions: thunderstorms and squally winds will give way to night-time frosts. Rescue services have declared danger levels I and II due to the threat to public infrastructure and agriculture.
