On Saturday, 18 April, an emergency occurred at the Khotyn Fortress State Historical and Architectural Reserve, where a large section of the main wall collapsed

This was announced by Andrii Dranchuk, the mayor of Khotyn.

The situation on the ground

According to the mayor, the landslide is significant, but fortunately, no one was injured. The reserve team and State Emergency Service rescuers responded immediately:

  • Safety: tourist access to the affected area has been completely blocked off.

  • Documentation: the damage is being documented and documents are being prepared for the expert commission.

  • Coordination: the Ministry of Culture, the Chernivtsi Regional State Administration and the Ministry of Community Development have been informed of the incident.

Restoration issues

The situation regarding the monument’s destruction has drawn attention to the reserve’s funding. According to the ‘Public Procurement’ section on the website of the ‘Khotyn Fortress’ State Historical and Architectural Reserve, the latest information on restoration or construction work dates back to 2021.

Following the start of the full-scale invasion in 2022, the institution paid only for critically necessary services — electricity and site security. The lack of capital investment in strengthening the walls over recent years may have been one of the factors behind the current collapse.

Experts must now identify urgent measures to preserve the damaged section to prevent further destruction of this architectural gem of Bukovina.
