The Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Oleksandr Syrskyi, has responded publicly for the first time to the sharp criticism levelled at him by the Acting Minister of Defence, Mykhailo Fedorov. He thanked the former minister for his work and expressed his hope that he would remain part of Ukraine’s team.

Oleksandr Syrskyi wrote about this on his social media accounts.

The Commander-in-Chief recalled the defence of Kyiv in the spring of 2022, emphasising that it is thanks to this operation that briefings can now be held and government decisions taken in the Ukrainian capital.

“I am proud that, thanks to the Kyiv defence operation in 2022, we managed to defend our capital. And now, briefings can be held, visions formulated and decisions taken in this city,” Syrskyi wrote.

He added that the Ukrainian military would continue to do everything possible to ensure that such events could take place in a free and independent Ukraine, and also emphasised the need to focus on the war and an effective strategy.

Syrskyi also addressed Mykhailo Fedorov separately.

“I would like to thank Mykhailo Fedorov for his work as Ukraine’s Minister of Defence. I hope he will continue to remain part of Ukraine’s team. Together to victory!” said the Commander-in-Chief.

The day before, Mykhailo Fedorov had harshly criticised Syrskyi during a briefing. According to him, after joining the Ministry of Defence, he encountered resistance to reforms and initiatives, whilst the Commander-in-Chief, he claims, refused to discuss the issues openly.

Fedorov also stated that during his six months at the Ministry of Defence, he had identified eleven systemic problems in the management of the Defence Forces and accused Syrskyi of creating internal conflict rather than seeking ways to wage an asymmetric struggle against Russia.

Earlier, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed that there were serious differences between Fedorov and Syrskyi, and that problems within the armed forces and regarding mobilisation remained unresolved.
