UAV operators, drivers, and electronic warfare specialists: what volunteers choose most often
The Ministry of Defence of Ukraine has named five military specialties that volunteers most often chose in January and February 2026.
The ministry noted that one of the main advantages of joining the Defence Forces through the recruitment system is the opportunity to independently choose not only a specific unit, but also a speciality that best suits the candidate's needs.
The Ministry of Defence emphasised that this allows individuals to take up positions where their knowledge and skills from civilian life can already form the basis for effective service.
Unmanned systems have become the most popular field among volunteers.
According to data from the 1st Recruitment Centre of the Ukrainian Ground Forces, approximately 33% of candidates, or one in three, chose the speciality of UAV operator or pilot.
Such positions involve controlling unmanned aerial vehicles for reconnaissance, surveillance, fire correction and direct fire strikes.
The units reportedly prefer candidates aged 18 to 45 who have basic technical skills and can maintain attention and concentration for long periods of time.
Drivers ranked second in popularity.
About 18% of volunteers chose this field.
These include the positions of driver, driver-paramedic, and driver-mechanic.
Such specialists are involved in the transportation of personnel, equipment, ammunition, and the evacuation of the wounded.
Candidates aged 18 to 50 with a category B, C, D or CE driving licence, basic technical knowledge and physical endurance are sought for these positions.
The third most popular speciality is technical systems operator.
These are specialists in the fields of electronic warfare, electronic protection and communications.
This field was chosen by 13% of candidates.
The Ministry of Defence emphasises that the demand for specialists capable of countering enemy electronic warfare remains consistently high.
Candidates for these positions must be between 18 and 45 years of age, have technical thinking skills, basic electronics skills, and a willingness to learn.
Another 7% of recruits expressed their willingness to serve in command positions.
These are squad and platoon commanders.
Usually, volunteers aged 21 to 45 with leadership qualities and good physical fitness are sought for such positions.
Preference is also given to those who already have military experience.
Another 6% of candidates chose the specialty of master or other technical specialties that support the life of the army.
Such specialists are engaged in the repair and maintenance of machinery, equipment and weapons.
These positions are mainly filled by volunteers aged 18 to 50 with technical education or relevant experience, as well as those who are attentive and responsible.
