This is according to Euronews.
Poll shows significant lead for the ruling party
According to a survey by Brivis, conducted between 5 and 11 May among 1,551 respondents, the Civic Contract party could secure around 65% of the vote. The poll indicates a significant lead over the opposition. At the same time, according to the survey, none of the other parties is polling at more than 12%. If the election results confirm the pollsters’ findings, Pashinyan’s party will retain its influential position in the future parliament.
Russia steps up pressure on Yerevan
Against the backdrop of the election campaign, Moscow continues to criticise the Armenian authorities’ decision to deepen cooperation with the European Union. The Russian Foreign Ministry announced the recall of the Russian ambassador to Armenia, Sergey Kopyrkin, to Moscow for consultations. The ministry stated that the decision was linked to Yerevan’s moves towards rapprochement with the EU. In addition, Russia has announced temporary restrictions on imports of certain types of fruit and vegetables from Armenia. Moscow had previously imposed restrictions on Armenian mineral water, wine and cognac. Last year, Armenia imported over 80% of its natural gas from Russia.
The EAEU called on Armenia to make up its mind
The leaders of the Eurasian Economic Union countries issued a joint statement expressing concern over Armenia’s plans to join the European Union. The document states that such a move could pose risks to the economic security of the union’s member states. During the EAEU summit in Astana, the leaders of Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan called on Yerevan to hold a nationwide referendum on the country’s future foreign policy course. Russian President Vladimir Putin also stated that “the crisis in Ukraine began at a certain point with Ukraine’s attempts to join the EU”, drawing a parallel between the Ukrainian and Armenian situations.
