An ecologist and founder of the KEKC, Volodymyr Boreyko, has died in a road accident near Kyiv
This was announced on Facebook by Volodymyr Boreyko’s wife, Olga Musafirova.
On Thursday, 13 March, Ukrainian ecologist, conservationist and head of the Kyiv Ecological and Cultural Centre, Volodymyr Boreyko, was killed in a road accident near Kyiv.
His wife, Olga Musafirova, announced his death.
In her post, she wrote that her husband, Volodymyr Boreyko, whom she described as a well-known Ukrainian ecologist, had died in the accident near Kyiv.
She also noted that the family would provide further details regarding the time and place of the funeral.
The circumstances of the tragedy have not yet been disclosed.
Volodymyr Boreyko was born in 1958 in Russia.
He studied at Donetsk State University.
He began his career as a mechanic at the Donetsk tram depot.
He later worked on the presidium of the Ukrainian Society for Nature Conservation, as well as at the Ministry of Environmental Protection of Ukraine.
He reportedly left the ministry due to the inaction of the leadership.
Boreyko headed the non-governmental organisation Kyiv Ecological and Cultural Centre.
He was an animal rights activist and one of the leading figures in the environmental movement in Ukraine.
Over the years, Volodymyr Boreyko wrote over 200 books and more than 700 scientific articles.
These were devoted to nature conservation, environmental ethics and animal welfare.
Boreyko was also the initiator of a number of environmental protection laws.
His initiatives included a census of Ukraine’s oldest trees, the fight against dolphinariums and the use of traps, as well as campaigns to ban spring hunting.
In 2010, Volodymyr Boreyko was awarded the honorary title of Honoured Conservationist of Ukraine.
