The Kyiv–Uzhhorod train derailed in the Lviv region after colliding with a mobile crane; two people have died (updated)
On the morning of 1 May, an accident involving a Kyiv–Uzhhorod passenger train occurred in the Lviv region near the village of Lyubyntsi, not far from Stryi.
According to available information, the train collided with a mobile crane whilst crossing a level crossing. As a result of the impact, the locomotive derailed.
Ukrzaliznytsia stated that the accident was caused by the mobile crane driver’s violation of traffic rules. He drove onto the level crossing despite the red lights, after which the collision with the train occurred.
The train driver was killed in the accident. His assistant suffered serious injuries and is in hospital. The mobile crane driver was also hospitalised; according to other reports, he too has died. The train passengers were unharmed.
The company clarified that the deceased driver was a veteran who had returned from the front and was working in his profession again. Ukrzaliznytsia emphasised that the tragedy occurred because the crane driver drove onto the level crossing despite the warning signals being active. The chairman of the board of Ukrzaliznytsia, Oleksandr Pertsovskyi, reported that at the time of the accident there were doctors on the train who attempted to assist the driver, but were unable to save him. The train is being promptly towed away to resume services.
