Promoter Kabayela has threatened Usyk with the loss of his WBC title
Frank Warren said this in an interview with Sky Sports.
Warren calls for a fight between Usyk and Cabayel
Heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk, following his victory over Rico Verhoeven, now faces the question of his next fight.
One option being mentioned is a rematch with Verhoeven. At the same time, the Ukrainian faces a mandatory WBC title defence against German super-heavyweight Agit Kabayel.
Kabayel’s promoter, Frank Warren, who represents Queensberry, insists that his client should be given a title fight immediately.
What the promoter said
Warren stated that Kabayel’s team would not agree to a scenario in which Usyk first fights a rematch with Verhoeven.
According to the promoter, Kabayel has long held the status of No. 1 contender and wants to exercise his right to a title fight.
“There’s been talk of a rematch. We won’t go along with that. Agit has long held the status of No. 1 contender. He wants to exercise his well-deserved right. That is exactly what we will demand from the WBC. I hope we’ll see this through to the end,” said Warren.
Risk to the WBC title
The promoter also stated that if Usyk’s fight with Cabayel does not take place in the autumn, the Ukrainian must vacate the WBC belt.
Prior to this, investor Turki Al-Sheikh noted that he would like to see a rematch between Usyk and Verhoeven, but at the same time acknowledged the existence of a mandatory WBC defence against Cabayel.
