Russia is stepping up its attacks and preparing a new offensive in south-eastern Ukraine
Russian missiles and drones launched a massive attack on Ukraine on Tuesday night. According to local authorities, at least 17 people were killed and over 100 were injured.
Four people were killed in Kyiv, including a 12-year-old boy, and a further 45 were injured. Explosions rang out during the night and continued until morning, damaging buildings and causing fires.
Nine people were killed in the Odesa region as a result of the strikes, three in Dnipro, and one in Zaporizhzhia. Port infrastructure in Odesa was also damaged.
The Ukrainian Air Force reported that Russia had used 19 ballistic missiles, 25 cruise missiles and 659 attack drones.
Vadym Skibitsky, Deputy Head of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ukrainian Ministry of Defence, stated that Russia is stepping up ballistic missile strikes on Ukrainian cities. According to him, Moscow produces around 60 Iskander-type missiles every month and is increasing the number of launchers.
Skibitsky noted that Ukraine does not have a sufficient number of modern air defence systems, particularly Patriot systems, to fully protect the country’s territory. He added that critical infrastructure, especially energy facilities, remains vulnerable following the winter campaign of strikes.
During visits to European countries, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that the priority is to obtain air defence systems and interceptor missiles. He also instructed the Commander of the Air Force to liaise with partners regarding the delivery schedule for missiles for the Patriot systems.
According to Skibitsky, the intensification of missile and drone attacks is part of preparations for a new offensive. He stated that Russia is preparing a ground operation in south-eastern Ukraine and may deploy up to 20,000 additional troops from its strategic reserve.
Overall, intelligence estimates suggest there are around 680,000 Russian troops on Ukrainian territory. Russia’s aim is to capture the entire Donbas region by September.
Skibitsky also stated that such actions indicate Russia’s intention to continue the war.
