On the night of 16 April, Russian forces launched a massive attack on Odesa using missiles and drones. The number of dead and injured rose throughout the morning.

Following a night-time attack by Russian forces on Odesa, initial reports indicated that five people had been injured. The blast wave damaged windows in buildings in the Primorskyi district.

It later emerged that the city had come under several waves of combined missile and drone strikes. The shelling caused damage to port, critical and residential infrastructure. The facades and glazing of at least three high-rise buildings were destroyed, and a student hall of residence and adjacent buildings were damaged. Fires broke out at some of the sites.

As of this morning, six deaths and 11 injuries had been reported. Infrastructure and a residential building in the Khadzhibey district were damaged, and the blast wave shattered over 300 windows in several buildings. Damage was also reported in one of the parks in the Primorsky district.

Later, the death toll rose to seven, and subsequently to eight. According to updated figures, 16 people were injured.

In the morning, Russian forces struck a multi-storey residential building. The strike caused a fire, with significant destruction reported and some flats destroyed. Rescue workers extinguished the blaze and cleared the damaged structures.

Residential buildings, a port infrastructure facility and storage premises were also damaged. The blast wave shattered windows in three five-storey student halls of residence.

All fires caused by the shelling have been extinguished. Rescue workers, psychologists and other services are working at the sites. Clean-up operations following the attack are ongoing.
