Russian drone crashes near Bandera monument in Lviv: church and polytechnic damaged
Russia attacked Lviv with attack drones on the morning of 15 January, with one of the drones crashing into a playground near the Stepan Bandera monument next to the Church of St Olga and St Elizabeth. This is reported by BBC News Ukraine, citing a correspondent in Lviv and statements by local authorities.
According to the BBC, the attack occurred around 6:30 am. The Bandera monument itself survived, but the blast wave smashed windows in Lviv Polytechnic buildings, residential buildings and damaged the stained glass windows of the neo-Gothic church of Anna and Elizabeth. Mayor Andriy Sadovyi said that a utility worker who was clearing snow near the site of the drone crash was injured, but his condition is satisfactory.
Explosive experts were working at the site, searching for debris and possible explosive residues in the deep snow. The playground near the monument was completely destroyed. Due to the consequences of the attack, traffic in the city centre was temporarily blocked, and several trolleybus routes were suspended.
In a later statement, Sadovyi said that the blast wave damaged buildings in three districts of Lviv, with more than 50 windows blown out, including a school and a vocational school. The attack took place against the backdrop of parallel drone strikes in Kyiv and other regions of Ukraine.
