The Security Service of Ukraine detained Russian intelligence agents who were recording the aftermath of the strike on Lviv region
The Counterintelligence Service of Ukraine detained two agents of Russia's GRU military intelligence who, on the orders of their handlers, were investigating the consequences of a missile strike on civilian infrastructure in the Lviv region. The attack took place on the night of 8 to 9 January 2026.
According to the case file, the reconnaissance was carried out by a 64-year-old resident of Mukachevo, who was recruited remotely, and his 22-year-old unemployed neighbour. After the shelling, the younger agent arrived in the Lviv region from the Zakarpattia region and gradually visited the sites of the strikes. He photographed the locations, recorded the coordinates on electronic maps, and transmitted the collected data to his older accomplice, who remained in Mukachevo and reported directly to the Russian curator.
The SSU detained both of them at the same time. One was arrested at his place of residence in Mukachevo, the other was detained in the Lviv region while collecting information near the site of the rocket strike. According to the investigation, the Russian side planned to use information about the extent of the destruction for information and psychological operations and to prepare new strikes on the region.
During searches of the suspects' premises, electronic devices containing evidence of cooperation with the Russian special services were seized. The SSU also intercepted conversations between one of the agents and his supervisor, which were added to the criminal case file. The detainees were notified of their suspicion under Part 2 of Article 111 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, which provides for liability for high treason under martial law.
Both suspects are currently in custody. They face life imprisonment with confiscation of property. The operational measures were carried out by SBU officers in Zakarpattia Oblast under the procedural guidance of the regional prosecutor's office.
