The US will provide $100 million for repairs to the Chernobyl nuclear power plant’s containment structure following a Russian drone strike
This was announced by Denys Shmyhal. The US State Department also confirmed the US commitment, stating that it would contribute up to $100 million towards the restoration of Chernobyl’s nuclear safety systems.
The United States will allocate up to $100 million for the repair of the new safe confinement at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant.
This refers to the shelter that was damaged by a Russian drone.
According to Denys Shmyhal, the issue of funding the restoration of the containment was discussed during the International Chernobyl Conference.
Currently, the total financial requirements for the repairs are estimated at approximately €500 million.
Shmyhal thanked the US State Department, Energy Secretary Chris Wright, the US delegation working in Kyiv, and the US administration for their contribution to strengthening radiation safety in Europe.
According to Reuters, US aid is to be used to repair the large radiation shield at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, which has protected the site since the 1986 accident.
The Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant was the site of the worst nuclear accident in history when one of the plant’s four reactors exploded in 1986.
The new safe confinement covers the destroyed fourth power unit and is designed to contain the spread of radioactive materials.
According to “Suspilne”, a Russian drone damaged the containment on 14 February 2025, after which the structure lost its airtightness.
The Associated Press previously reported that the IAEA had emphasised the urgency of repairing the structure, with the cost of the work estimated at €500 million. At that time, partners had already committed to providing €130 million.
According to The Guardian, damage to the new safe confinement could complicate radiation safety monitoring, particularly due to risks to the systems that maintain the shelter’s integrity.
The US decision to contribute up to $100 million is part of international efforts to restore the protective infrastructure of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant.
For Ukraine, this is not merely a matter of repairing a single structure, but also the safety of a facility that is of significance to the whole of Europe.
As reported by ThePublic, Ukraine is tracking ships carrying agricultural products that Russia has illegally exported from the temporarily occupied territories. The Foreign Ministry stated that it would respond to all such cases, and this applies not only to Israel.
