The Russian UAV centre ‘Rubicon’
On the night of 17 April, Ukraine’s Special Operations Forces used drones to strike a logistics base belonging to the secret Russian unmanned systems centre ‘Rubicon’ in the occupied town of Mangush in the Donetsk region.

This was reported by the Special Operations Forces.

The ‘Rubicon’ was struck by drones deployed by the SSO’s Middle-strike units. Explosions and large-scale fires were observed at the site.

The Special Operations Forces note that ‘Rubicon’ uses almost all strike and reconnaissance drones available in the Russian Federation against the Security and Defence Forces of Ukraine, with the exception of ‘Shaheds’. Rubicon’s arsenal includes conventional and fibre-optic FPV drones, Molniya and Lancet strike UAVs, ZALA, Orlan and SuperCam reconnaissance drones, as well as maritime drones.

The classified Russian UAV centre ‘Rubicon’: what is known

The ‘Rubicon Centre for Advanced Unmanned Technologies’ first came to light in 2024 after it was inspected by Russian Defence Minister Andrei Belousov.

According to “Military”, “Rubicon” is an organisation responsible for the procurement and development of UAVs and tactics for their deployment following analysis of data from the front line. The centre trains drone instructors, educates UAV operators and has its own combat units at its disposal.

Its main feature is maximum flexibility in the development and deployment of new drones. It was Rubicon’s units that first began using fibre-optic FPV drones and interceptor drones in the Russian army.

Russia is facing mounting pressure due to the situation on the front line, economic problems and strikes by Ukrainian drones on its territory. European officials suggest that Moscow’s increasingly aggressive rhetoric may be linked to attempts to restart the negotiation process on its own terms.
