The special operation in the Holosiivskyi district of the capital has been concluded. Members of the National Police’s KORD special unit stormed a shop where an armed suspect had barricaded himself inside. The attacker was killed during the attempt to apprehend him

This was officially announced by the Minister of the Interior, Ihor Klymenko.

Details of the assault and hostage-taking

The situation became critical when it emerged that the perpetrator had taken people inside the building hostage. Before the start of the assault, professional negotiators attempted to make contact with the man, but a peaceful resolution to the conflict could not be reached.

Key details of the operation:

  • Armed resistance: during the assault, the attacker opened fire on law enforcement officers.

  • Outcome: special forces neutralised the gunman during the arrest.

  • Consequences: the number of victims caused by the attacker is currently being clarified. It is known that there are fatalities and injuries as a result of the incident.

Following the conclusion of the forceful phase of the special operation in Kyiv, law enforcement officers identified the attacker, who was neutralised during the assault. According to our own sources, the attacker was a native of the Russian Federation who was residing in the capital.

Personal details

According to preliminary information from sources, the person who opened fire on civilians and police was:

  • Surname and first name: Vasylchenko Dmytro Vasylovych;

  • Date of birth: 21 April 1968;

  • Place of birth: Moscow, Russian Federation.

The perpetrator was officially registered in Kyiv. His current place of registration is recorded in the same district where the tragedy occurred — in a residential building on Demiivska Street.

Motives and investigation

Investigators are currently examining Vasylchenkov’s background to determine the reasons for his aggressive behaviour and the motives behind the hostage-taking at the supermarket. Law enforcement officers are checking whether he had legal grounds for possessing a weapon and whether he was linked to any criminal groups.

It should be noted that during his arrest, Vasylchenko put up fierce resistance and fired at KORD officers, for which he was neutralised by return fire. The number of casualties resulting from his actions on the street and inside the shop is still being determined by the investigation.
