Taiwan has launched a platform for gathering intelligence from Chinese citizens
The Taiwanese government has launched a dedicated website designed to encourage Chinese citizens to pass on intelligence, according to Reuters.
Taiwan and China, which considers the island part of its territory, have long been engaged in mutual intelligence activities. At the same time, Taiwan has repeatedly reported an increase in the number of espionage cases involving the People’s Republic of China.
The Taiwanese government rejects Beijing’s claims to sovereignty over the island and stresses that only its residents have the right to determine their own future.
Taiwan’s National Security Bureau stated that in recent years, China’s economy has faced growing difficulties, whilst political control by the authorities remains tight.
A one-minute promotional video has been posted on the newly created platform. According to Bureau representatives, it was created using artificial intelligence. The video shows a Chinese civil servant observing the investigation into his colleagues’ activities and their dismissal from their posts.
The site is blocked within China. At the same time, many Chinese citizens use VPNs to access blocked websites, as well as Western social media platforms and search engines.
The National Security Bureau has called on Chinese citizens, both within the country and abroad, to actively provide information. The agency noted that the new initiative follows the practice of similar bodies in the US, the UK and Israel.
The article also notes that China employs similar approaches. In 2024, the Chinese authorities set up a dedicated email address for reporting the activities of Taiwanese ‘separatists’.
