Zelenskyy said he had suggested to Putin that they meet this week
This is according to The Guardian.
A meeting to end the full-scale war could have taken place at the G7 summit in France (15–17 June), but the Russian dictator is not ready for negotiations.
“We have conveyed the message that we are ready to meet with Putin during the G7 summit, as Trump and Macron will be there – that is, Europeans and Americans. This is a good, in my opinion, a very good opportunity for everyone to meet together,” Zelenskyy said.
The head of state added that Europe and the US were in agreement, whilst the aggressor country had once again demonstrated that it was not ready for negotiations.
Zelenskyy’s letter to Putin: what is known
As a reminder, on 4 June, Volodymyr Zelenskyy published an open letter to the Kremlin leader proposing a meeting in a third country to reach agreements on a lasting peace.
The Office of the President understood that the dictator was unlikely to respond constructively, but the appeal was addressed to several audiences at once – Putin himself, the Russian elite and international partners.
In response, Putin criticised Zelenskyy’s initiative, citing the letter’s alleged “rude tone”. At the same time, he rejected the idea of face-to-face talks, noting that he “saw no point in it”.
Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andriy Sibiga, for his part, stated that Putin had missed an opportunity to withdraw from a war that is failing, and that international pressure on Russia would only intensify going forward.
