Poland wants Germany to pay 10,000 zlotys a year to victims of Nazism
This is reported by the *Süddeutsche Zeitung*.
According to the newspaper, Warsaw’s new demand is considerably milder than the reparations claims put forward by the previous Polish government.
How many people could receive payments
The number of Polish victims of Nazism who are still alive is estimated at around 50,000.
If Germany agrees to the proposed scheme, each of them would receive 10,000 zlotys per year. That is approximately 2,333 euros.
How much might this cost Germany
According to journalists’ estimates, Germany’s expenditure in the first year could amount to around 100 million euros.
The total amount of payments could reach around 300 million euros, as the number of living beneficiaries is gradually decreasing.
How does this differ from Poland’s previous demands
In 2022, the previous Polish government demanded reparations from Germany for Nazi crimes amounting to 6.22 trillion zlotys, or around 1.316 trillion euros.
Germany rejected these claims at the time, stating that it saw no legal basis for such payments.
Following a change of government, Poland, led by Donald Tusk, has noticeably softened its stance, but has not abandoned the idea of compensation for victims of Nazism.
What Germany promised
In 2024, Germany promised payments to surviving Polish victims of the Nazi regime.
However, the question of the specific mechanism and funding for such payments remains unresolved.
