‘Slovakia will not pay for the war’. Fico spoke out against large-scale aid to Ukraine at the NATO summit in Ankara
NATO Summit in Ankara
Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has spoken out against the allocation of further financial and military aid to Ukraine. He stated that he intends to send a Slovak delegation to the forthcoming NATO summit in Ankara on 7–8 July without the authority to approve such decisions.

Aktuality reports this.

According to Politico, at the summit, NATO leaders are expected to reaffirm their commitment to collective defence, announce increased military support for Ukraine and once again recognise Russia as a long-term threat. Alliance countries are expected to pledge billions of dollars towards the procurement of new weapons and the expansion of production capacity.

Fico described this aid as “substantial” and stated that over the coming week he plans to meet with the country’s top officials to ensure that the Slovak delegation travels to the summit without a mandate to commit Slovakia to new military loans or financial contributions.

“I cannot stop other countries that want to chip in for the war. Do you know what might happen? A drone might fly in here, intentionally or unintentionally, crash into a residential building, causing deaths or injuries, and we could end up with a Third World War. So, speaking on behalf of Slovakia: no support for the war; Slovakia will not pay for Ukraine’s military expenditure,” the Prime Minister stated.

Earlier, Politico also reported that NATO countries are considering announcing €70 billion in aid for Ukraine at the July summit in Ankara. This idea is being proposed as an alternative to the plan for each ally to contribute 0.25 per cent of its GDP to Ukraine, which several countries have rejected.
