Foreign Minister Andriy Sibiga has appointed Yaroslav Chornyhor to be responsible for engagement with the Belarusian opposition. He will hold the post of Ambassador-at-Large for democratic transformation, engagement with democratic forces and national movements in unfriendly countries.

This has been reported by “European Truth”.

The Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has appointed a representative responsible for liaising with the Belarusian opposition.

Foreign Minister Andriy Sibiga has appointed Yaroslav Chornyhor to this post.

Chornyhor is the director of the Russian and Belarusian Studies Programme at the “Ukrainian Prism” Foreign Policy Council.

He will serve as an ambassador-at-large for democratic transformation, engagement with democratic forces and national movements in unfriendly countries.

According to “European Truth”, this appointment is intended to improve Ukraine’s cooperation with the Belarusian opposition without waiting for a separate presidential decree on a special representative for Belarus.

Earlier, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced the idea of creating the post of special representative for Belarus.

However, this appointment has not yet taken place, as the special representative must be appointed by presidential decree.

According to the publication, the search for a candidate has been delayed. As a result, the announced visit to Kyiv by Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, leader of the Belarusian democratic opposition, was postponed in March.

It is likely that Chornogora’s appointment to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will also unblock preparations for Tsikhanouskaya’s visit.

What is known about Yaroslav Chornogor

Yaroslav Chornyhor holds a PhD in History.

His research covers topical issues of Ukraine’s foreign policy, information security, and countering Russian propaganda and disinformation.

He also conducts analysis on Belarus and Russia, political processes in these countries and their future transformation.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Heorhiy Tykhyi previously stated that the appointment of a special representative for Belarus would help to better coordinate pressure on the regime, neutralise the threats it poses, and support democratic Belarusians who wish to live in a democratic, European Belarus.
