The National Bank of Ukraine has issued a commemorative coin entitled ‘Ukrainian Avant-Garde: Alexandra Exter’, dedicated to the outstanding Ukrainian artist and one of the most prominent figures of the 20th-century European avant-garde

This was announced by the NBU’s press office.

The coin marks the start of a new series on the Ukrainian avant-garde

The coin’s release marks the start of a new direction in the National Bank’s numismatic programme, dedicated to Ukrainian avant-garde art and its representatives. The presentation took place on 22 May during the opening of the ‘Avant-gardist Women’ exhibition at the Museum of the Avant-garde in Kyiv. According to NBU Governor Andriy Pyshnyy, the new series aims to promote Ukraine’s cultural heritage and restore Ukrainian artists to their rightful place in the history of world art. Oleksandra Exter was an artist, teacher and one of the founders of the Art Deco style. Her work had a significant influence on the development of European modernism and the theatre arts.

The coin is made of silver

The commemorative coin has a face value of 10 hryvnias and is made of 999-fine silver. It is octagonal in shape and features colour printing. The obverse depicts a sketch of a theatre costume for ‘The Spanish Dance’, created by Oleksandra Exter. The reverse depicts a stylised fragment of a theatre stage, which references her scenographic works. The coin has a mintage of up to 10,000 copies. It will be available for purchase from 2 June 2026 in the NBU’s online numismatic shop and from distributor banks.
