In Catalonia, police have arrested Jonathan Andik, the son of Isaac Andik, founder of the fashion chain Mango. He is being questioned in connection with the death of his father, who, according to preliminary reports, fell into a mountain ravine near Barcelona in December 2024.

This is according to The Guardian.

Catalan police have arrested Jonathan Andik, the son of Isaac Andik, founder of the fashion chain Mango.

He is being questioned in connection with his father’s death in the mountains near Barcelona almost 18 months ago.

Isaac Andik died in December 2024. He was 71 years old. According to the preliminary version of events, he fell approximately 100 metres into a ravine whilst hiking in Montserrat with his son Jonathan.

Following the death of Mango’s founder, condolences were expressed by politicians, journalists and representatives of the fashion world.

How the investigation’s version has changed

Initially, the Catalan police force, the Mossos d’Esquadra, treated Isaac Andik’s death as an accident.

However, last year, police officers and judicial sources told El País and La Vanguardia that the case was being treated as a possible murder.

On Tuesday, the Mossos d’Esquadra announced the arrest of Jonathan Andik. A representative of the Andik family confirmed that he is being questioned in connection with his father’s death.

What the Spanish media reported

El País reported last year that the police had found no direct or conclusive evidence to explain exactly what had happened in the gorge.

At the same time, according to the publication, investigators had uncovered a number of clues which, taken together, led them to abandon the theory of a simple accident and consider the possibility of murder.

La Vanguardia reported that the judge presiding over the case changed Jonathan Andik’s official status from witness to possible suspect last September.

The Andik family’s position

The Andik family had previously stated that they had not commented and would not comment on the death of Isaac Andik throughout these months.

At the same time, in a statement to the media, the family emphasised their respect for the investigation and their willingness to continue cooperating with the relevant authorities.

The family also stated that they hope for the swiftest possible conclusion of the proceedings and the proving of Jonathan Andik’s innocence.

What is known about Isaac Andik

Isaac Andik was born in 1953 in Istanbul to a Sephardic Jewish family.

In the late 1960s, he emigrated to Catalonia with his relatives. He started his business by selling T-shirts to his classmates.

Andik later moved into wholesale, selling clothes at street markets, and in 1984 he opened the first Mango store.

Last March, Mango’s global retail director, César de Vicente, told Agence France-Presse that Andik had spotted a need for colour and style.

The Mango founder subsequently opened dozens of shops across Europe. According to de Vicente, Andik realised that having a single name and brand for all the shops would make the concept much stronger.
