The US and Iran held talks lasting several hours in Switzerland on the nuclear deal and the Strait of Hormuz
A further round of talks between the United States and Iran took place in Switzerland, during which the parties discussed in detail the new nuclear deal, the situation in Lebanon and the safety of shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.
The talks lasted until Sunday and were part of a 60-day process aimed at reaching new agreements on Iran’s nuclear programme.
According to Axios, Vice-President JD Vance is coordinating the negotiations on the US side. White House special representatives Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner also took part in the meetings. Representatives from Pakistan and Qatar are acting as mediators.
Axios correspondent Barak Ravid, citing a US diplomatic source, reported that the parties held productive talks on all points of the memorandum signed on 17 June.
Among the main topics of the meeting were all the components of the future agreement on Iran’s nuclear programme. The parties paid particular attention to the mechanisms for implementing the memorandum and coordination between all participants in the negotiation process.
A significant portion of the talks was devoted to the situation in Lebanon. According to the source, one of the central topics was the mechanism for resolving the conflict and ensuring compliance with the ceasefire.
The parties also discussed the situation in the Strait of Hormuz, in particular Iran’s recent statements regarding the possible closure of the waterway. The US side emphasised that it is committed to ensuring the strait remains fully open to shipping.
According to the diplomat, significant progress was made on this issue.
The negotiators also discussed the format for further consultations between political representatives and technical teams. According to preliminary reports, the political talks may conclude on Monday, whilst the technical teams will remain in Switzerland to continue their work.
According to an American diplomatic source, all four parties to the negotiation process are currently satisfied with the progress of the meetings.
The source noted that the mediators are helping the parties to resolve contentious issues, and that the initial stage of the talks is laying the groundwork for building trust going forward.
